Their chassis tuning for anything vaguely performance oriented has been on point for quite a while, actually.
Would you believe me if I told you a 2006 Malibu Maxx had a very fun, confidence-inspiring chassis setup? The SS model definitely did.

I’m also trying to wrap my head around that reasoning. Why does Cadillac need a mid-engined car? Are they repositioning themselves in the market for luxury mid-engined cars or something? Because they’re not really fully back in their home market yet. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, just that I don’t get the business reasoning. Also, I haven’t paid that much attention to it because rumors.

Dear God, I just read that article and Jonny is ridiculous. Yeah the chassis is better but him making the claim the pilot sport 4s and Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 are in the same class is just stupid. It feels like they’re trying to help out Chevrolet’s sales. The regular SS would’ve been a better match performance wise. They said they couldn’t get a performance pack 2, but didn’t mention anything about a regular SS.

Speaking as someone who has tracked the Goodyears on a SS 1LE Camaro...
They are a bit disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, they took a whole day at Barber Motorsports Park, along with 9000 miles of street use, and still haven’t worn down to the cords.
But if the improvement from the Pilot Super Sports to the Pilot Sport 4S is anything to go by, the Goodyears aren’t anywhere near as capable as the Michelins.
The track wheels will be getting Pilot Sport 4Ss soon.

I remember reading something from a Chevy engineer saying they benchmarked the sport cups for that tire. The ats v runs super sport and the numbers support what I’m saying, ~1g. 1.12Gs lateral from pilot sport 4s would be mighty impressive. I run 265s in the Continental extreme contact sport on the track and they’re great, but I’m not kidding myself thinking I’m not missing anything without running sport cups or similar.

Yeah but the 1LE is already $4k cheaper than the Pack 1. How much more is the Pack 2? And are they going to be able to make up 3.3 seconds? Not with that chassis or amount of hp. Chevy has been stomping Ford in performance and affordability lately....
3.3 seconds quicker. In other words, these two cars wouldn’t be allowed to race together. Different class doesn’t cover it. The list of cars the Camaro went faster than should embarrass some OEMs: Porsche Cayman GT4,
2014 Audi R8
V10 Plus,
Ferrari
458 Italia.
The Camaro is now in another class as its now fighting with supercars. Dont get me wrong, if the Mustang was not being compared to the Camaro, we would be amazed by its specs. But in the last Head 2 Head (of Camaro vs Mustang) the base Camaro SS was as fast as the holy grail GT350R. That says alot

That’s always been my biggest issue with “comparison tests” - make sure the cars actually compare. In the very least, put them both on the same tires. It’s not hard or expensive but can drastically affect the way they drive.

Id like it to be a Cadillac because their design language looks more mature.
This Cadillac concepts pretty old but you get the idea of what it could be. The chevy version is almost guaranteed to be overwrought (see every high performance car they make)

I priced a similarly equipped Camaro SS at over 50k without adding in the 1le package. No silly stripes etc. I’m not arguing the Camaro isn’t better than the mustang, I’m arguing the 1le was the wrong choice against a pp1 mustang. I can’t believe they didn’t have one in their fleet unless Patrick George had been out to Cali lately.

From the paddock talk and my tire guru, word is that the Pilot Sport Cup 2s are fantastic for about 2 laps before they start getting greasy and hot. The 4S retains the longevity of the PSS with a little higher ultimate grip. Hence why that’s my next set of track tires.
The 285 front, 305 rear tires on a SS 1LE and ZL1 are fairly darn good. They are both within the noise compared with a stock ATS-V, and if you put Michelins on the Camaro, you would likely have a slight edge to the Camaro based on the tire size (although I would hold that would be very slight).

I’ve heard the same about pilot cups, I just don’t drive fast enough to use that level of grip in a non caged car. I’d like to see how the Goodyear’s compare to the Hankook RS4 and other extreme or whatever they’re called tires in that group. The Continentals are absolutely fantastic in the Pacific Northwest rain.

Thank you. I almost tore my hair out reading a front page comment thread about a Brz vs a civic Si. Some guy claiming the Si was faster around ALL tracks because of one comparison test, where the Si had 200tw tires, and the Brz had stock tires. And the Brz ran the track in the rain.

Ok so base of both are around $44k with magnetic. But again same price now 3.3 seconds slower. Pack 2 obviously will be closer but how much more?

01/31/2018 at 22:10 | 0 |
The SS without the 1le package is also 3.3 seconds faster? That’s the core of my argument. The pp1 isn’t the competitor to the 1le, but they brought it along anyways. I don’t know how much faster the pp2 will be, but knowing the tire and the width, it should be seconds.
I think the Camaro is fantastic, the z28 is a great track day buy right now. I just think that comparison was disingenuous.

Oh, it felt light years beyond the last gen CTS, no question. I didn’t get a chance to really inspect the details. I did spend 10 minutes or so feeling my way around the cabin. Then, I went right over to the S class. The Merc had quilted seats, which I think are a class touch, but I didn’t feel there was a real quality difference. I actually expected there to be based on all the articles, but really the CT6 felt top notch to my plebeian ass.

Ford did it to themselves though. PP1 is a decent enough package for performance, but the 1LE is more performance oriented. PP2 is closer to the 1LE package.
Looks like PP2 is priced at $6,500. I think it’s available on the base trim as well. So it’s certainly price competitive.
